The reason Puerto Rico is in this game is because of its pitching. Alvarado will get the call in the biggest game of the WBC, being put in the unenviable position of trying to shut down the Dominican lineup.
Alvarado did run into some trouble in his last outing against Italy, cruising through the first four innings before allowing three runs (two earned) in giving up a bases-loaded three-run double to Anthony Rizzo.
If Alvarado has a bad inning against this powerful Dominican lineup, he will wish the only thing that happened to him was a three-run double.
United StatesThe 2013 World Baseball Classic will be an international baseball competition. The main tournament is scheduled to be held from March 2 to 19. For the first time, a qualifying round was played during the second half of 2012 that expands tournament participation from 16 to 28 teams. Eight stadiums will be used during the main tournament, and the host countries for the First Round are Japan, Taiwan, Puerto Rico and the USA. The Second Round will be held in Tokyo, Japan and Miami, USA. The Championship Round will be held in San Francisco, USA.

If they were to hand out an MVP award for the entire World Baseball Classic, it would be hard to argue with Cano getting it. He is tearing the cover off the ball right now, hitting .500 and driving in six runs for the Dominican Republic.
Even though the Dominican lineup is incredibly deep, Cano is the straw that stirs the drink. If you are able to stop him—which no one has really done so far—you have a shot to keep this offense down for at least a few innings.
